Strategy Statement:

Implementing of the inspiration with the understanding of how a material can decay on the island, The absence of human care and conditioning will eventually allow for the environment to take over the area and flourish in a huge fashion. However in the snow everything is preserved.
The decay will be limited and degredation is at such a reduced rate that usually the building will not undergo much decay even after hundreds of years. However it will be eroded and changed from wind and other forces. To this extent the textures reflect this and so it has been reproduced in a way it might decay after 100 years.

Week 5 + Independent Study

Strategy Statement:
Showing the notion decay will occur in several ways.
Firstly in an interactive environment the use and implementation of props and buildings will create the setting for a end of the world level. Such as decayed structures and hints of people that did live there. Secondly use of landscape and ambience where the the absence of human interaction really sets the tone of the end for humanity but the taking over of wildlife, growth from plants, animals and adapting of environment into human structures and slowly collapsing it. Finally the iimplementation of the trailer showing off the environment will set up the mood and intention.

Week 4 + Independent Study

Today's Work:

Independent Study:

Shaun of the Dead: Trailer
This was chosen for its idea of the apocalypse but in a comedic tone

2012: Trailer
Standard end of the world movie, introducing the common themes that shows the end of the world

The Thing
The psychological effects of seeing the end of the world with second guessing what is real

Planet of The Apes
The epitome of end of the world movies, the twist at the end and the showing of evolving after the end of the world

The Mummy
The setting in a civilization long gone the mummy is an excellent end of the world movie.

Week 3 + Independent Study

Task for Today:

Independent Study:

Reflection:
Introduction of breakable objects made the idea of a decomposed structure a lot more feasible and quite impressive with joints and breakable's being added. A good lecture overall.

Week 2 + Independent Study

The Barcelona pavilion is the chosen building.

Three Materials:

Concrete:

Concrete goes through a curing process in order to set its materials into a strong compressive structure.
Concrete contains a number of different materials into its making; aggregate, water, cement and additives. It is a material that does well under high compressive strength but generally weak in tension. Under normal care concrete acts like sedimentary rock and can last up to 100 years however corrosion and other biological factors can shorten this by a large amount. Concrete is used for large structures that will undergo high compressive stress but not tension.

Glass:
Glass is made through high heat onto brittle crystalline structures and creating a rubber-molten material which when cooled becomes transitional. Glass is very brittle and has a very weak compression strength but average tension, its use in windows are in very thin sheets is common, colouring in glass is often due to FE2 impurities.

Marble:
Marble is metamorphic rock, limestone that hasn't undrergone pressure yet when being formed. Marble is cut off rock through traditional means of splitting with wood drenched over wood to expand and crack along pre-tensed cracks or through modern means of sawing and chiseling. Marble is altered when attacked by biological invasion such as plants and cause cracking but otherwise they are high compressive strength.

EXP 2 Week 1 Task + Independent Study

Task Image:

Independent Study:

Barcelona Pavillion:

The Pavillion while very sleek and often presenting a simple image, exposes itself to the elements giving faster corrosion and deterioration than most buildings would. By Mies Van de Rohe.

Rudin House:

The Rudin House is elevated on a concrete platform and when decayed will experience the decomposition from the bottom upwards, very simple cottage exterior and giving a sleek design from Herzog and deMeuron.

Bordeaux House:

By Rem Koolhaas/ OMA this building is built such that it stresses keep the building together pushing the elements into compression especially using a metal cord to tie down the top I beam.

Reflection:
The task presents in an interesting approach to understanding the limits and decay of buildings and their materials, the tv series it is based on seems like a good starting point for research and currently the work is under way.
